Puppies and First-time Boarders
|
Ah puppies! We love their cute little faces, adorable personalities, and just want to give them tons of kisses all the time. But because of all their youthful energy, puppies require a lot of hard work, including lots of playtime, attention, walks (because they need to go to the bathroom ... often), and patience, patience, patience.

Did You Know ...
... On average, a puppy can hold its bladder approximately 1/2 - 1 hour for each month that he/she is old (i.e. a four-month old puppy can hold its bladder for two - four hours), depending on the level of bladder development and maturity. And with the added stress of a new boarding experience, their "hold time" tends to run on the lower end of the spectrum.
... That there are two main levels of chewing that a puppy experiences, with the most destructive occuring at approximately ten months of age.
... That a puppy is the most receptive to positive/negative training from three to seven months of age.
... That socialization with as many different people and animals and settings during a puppy's life (3 - 12 months) is critical to a puppy's proper development into a well-adjusted dog, both mentally and socially.

'Ohana First Sleepover Program:
At 'Ohana Pet Paradise, we know how important it is for your dog (whether a puppy or an older dog) to have his/her first "real" boarding experience be a positive one and not one full of anxiety. Unfortunately, most owners wait until they are ready to go on vacation before thinking about how their dog(s) will handle boarding. The result is often a scary, anxious, and destructive (and costly) experience. If some time had simply been invested in preparing the dog for his/her first real stay, both it and future visits would be easier, less stressful, and less costly. That's where we can help.

Fee:
For a reduced rate of $25/night*, we are pleased to offer our 'Ohana Doggie's First Sleepover Package - This program is designed to slowly introduce your dog to boarding. Over the course of two or three weeks, you may bring your dog to stay with us for either our doggie farm daycare program or sleepover each week, slowly leading up to his/her full stay with us. This allows your dog to have short, positive experiences in a boarding facility, so he/she can draw from a positive memory base when it's time to board for a longer period of time.
Here's a typical suggested schedule:
Week 1: Doggie Farm Daycare (arrive in the morning, go home in afternoon)
Week 2: 1-night sleepover (arrive during day and sleep over) or 2-night sleepover
Week 3: 1-night sleepover (arrive during day and sleep over) or Final stay
Week 4: Final Stay

The great part about this program is that your dog becomes familiar with its surroundings, begins to get socialized being around other types of animals (goats, alpacas, llamas, etc.), learns to trust people, and develops his/her overall sense of well-being. All of this contributes to a healthy, well-adjusted, well-socialized dog who is comfortable in a boarding setting. And should you ever find yourself in an emergency situation needing to board your dog, there is no greater peace-of-mind than knowing that your loved one is comfortable being apart from you in a loving environment.
